The origin of SHISEIDO
Arinobu Fukuhara worked as a pharmacist head at a naval hospital at the age of 23 when he and his colleagues, also in their 20s, founded Pharmacy first in Japanese in the Western style.
Their motivation came from dissatisfaction with the drugs available at the time, and they were inspired to "take everything that is good in this world and use it to create new things".
The name "Shiseido" was chosen by the young pharmacist, with words taken from an I Ching quote which means, Do (堂): "home", Shi Sei (資 生): "where all are born".
The entire quote reads: "Praise all the good on earth, where all are born of him".
